Professor Paul Urbanski is senior consultant and deputy department head in the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the Cardiovascular Centre in Bad Neustadt, where up to 3,000 cardiac operations are performed every year. Professor Urbanski possesses general, vascular, and cardiothoracic surgical training. He has been a surgeon in Bad Neustadt since 1986 where he has personally performed, as of April 2010, more than 10,000 cardiovascular operations. In addition to the entire spectrum of cardiac surgery in adults, he has specialised in reconstructive procedures of the heart valves and surgery of the thoracic aorta.
Professor Urbanski has developed and established several surgical methods for repairing aortic valve and valve-sparing repair of the aortic root, and currently performs about 150 such procedures per year. His new technique of carotid perfusion in surgery of the aortic arch, well known through several publications, has led to improved surgical results (no mortality in 200 consecutive patients operated on between 2005 and 2009 because of aortic arch aneurysm - Eur J Cardiothorac Surg 2010; 37: 1332-6, DOI information: 10.1016/j.ejcts.2010.01.006).
His innovative techniques, for example, the valve-sparing aortic root repair - pictured here - as well as his scientific publications (PubMed) can be found here.
